The Importance Of Exercise For Healthy Skin

Benefits Of Exercise On Skin

Whilst most people know about the health benefits that exercise provides, fewer people know about the benefits exercise provides to the skin.

Some of these skin benefits include :

• Increased skin cell turnover.

• Increased oxygenation of the skin.

• Increased removal of toxins from the skin through sweating.

• Reduced risk of skin becoming congested.

• Improved colour and radiance of the skin.

• Reduction in the rate at which the skin ages.

Put simply, if you don’t do some form of exercise throughout the week your skin will suffer.

Without exercise your skin will become congested, your skin cells will turnover at a slower rate and your skin will age more quickly.

In short your skin will be unhealthy and look bad.

How To Get Started Exercising

One of the biggest reasons people give for not exercising is not having the time to exercise.

But now that you know about the benefits exercise brings to your skin, you probably want to start exercising if you are not already.

In this case, the easiest way to begin is to open up your schedule and allocate 30-60 minutes a few days each week which you will devote solely to exercising.

Once you have entered this in your schedule, you will be much more motivated to do it and after a few weeks it will soon become a habit.

Exercise Doesn’t Always Involve A Gym!

It is important to remember that doing exercise doesn’t necessarily mean you have to go to the gym.

Since we are primarily concerned with skin health, any form of sustained physical activity will bring huge benefits to your skin.

For example, instead of taking the car you could walk to school, work or to the shops. Or instead of taking a lift, you could walk up the stairs.

So if you are put off by the idea of going to the gym, don’t be. As long as you can remain fairly active throughout the day you will be exercising!

What Sort Of Exercise Should You Do?

Now that you understand the importance of exercising for skin health and scheduled some time in your diary, the next step is to decide what sort of exercise you want to do.

If you don’t want to do anything formal, you can do as suggested earlier by being physically active when you have the opportunity to do so.

If however you want something a bit more formal, there are three basic types of exercise you can do; aerobic, anaerobic and flexibility exercises. Let’s look at each of these briefly now.

Aerobic Exercise

Aerobic exercise, also called cardio exercise, involves exercises such as running or walking. You should aim to do cardio for at least 20 minutes three times a week.

Aerobic exercise will strengthen your heart, and most importantly, oxygenate your body. When you oxygenate your body regularly you will notice the health of your skin will improve quickly.

Anaerobic Exercise

Anaerobic exercise, also called strength training exercise, involves using either free standing weights or your own body weight.

Anaerobic exercise helps to develop your muscles. This is important because the more you develop your muscles the higher your metabolism will be, and the less fat your body will have.

Since many toxins are stored in body fat, keeping a lean figure is great news for the skin and will help to keep it looking clear and healthy.

Ideally you should aim to do anaerobic exercise 2-3 times a week, rotating it with aerobic exercise on alternate days.

Stretching

Stretching is something you can do everyday, or on the days when you don’t do any aerobic or anaerobic exercise.

Stretching helps to improve posture, reduce stress, prevent injury and relax your muscles after exercise.

Stretching also helps to stimulate the muscles which acts as a deep body detox to remove toxins that have been stored deeper in the body.

Make Exercise Fun

Regardless of the type of exercise you do, it is important that you make it fun! If you enjoy exercise you will be much more likely to stick with it in the long run.

So do the exercises you enjoy, and as you get more into it, try more challenging forms of exercise.

If you can, get a friend to exercise with you! Doing so will not only make exercise more fun, but you will both be able to motivate each other if you don’t feel like working out.

Exercise Improves Your Mood

Another major benefit of doing exercise is that eventually your mood will start to improve.

Not only will you feel happier and have a more optimistic outlook on life, but you will also be filled with more energy and stamina.

The reason exercise can have such a powerful influence on your mood is because exercise causes endorphins to be released in the body.

These feel good chemicals are also addictive, so the more you exercise the more you will want to exercise!

The trick is to develop the exercise habit first, and once it becomes a habit you will want to exercise all the time and you will love it!

The rewards will be a healthier body, less stress and great looking skin. All of which will help to slow down the aging process so you will look younger for longer.
