Home Living: How To Get Cheap Furniture

Cheap Ways To Furnish Your New Home

When you finally move into your new house or flat, the next thing you have to start thinking about is how you are going to furnish it.

Of course if your accommodation already comes fully furnished, then this will be less a concern for you.

However for first time renters your accommodation is more likely to be partly furnished or not furnished at all, because these types of properties are much cheaper to rent.

The fact that you may have to spend money on such things as sofas, beds, a mattress, washing machine, tables, lights and a TV means you will need to ensure that you have adequate funds saved up before you move in.

Otherwise you could find yourself sitting or sleeping on the floor for a few months, before you are able to afford the furniture you need.

However it is possible to furnish your property without spending a fortune, as long as you take the time to think about what you really need and hunt around for the best bargains.

Furnishing Your Home Cheaply

Whilst it may seem tempting to “pimp” up your new house or flat as soon as you move in, try to start slowly by getting the essential items first.

For example, some of the first things you should get (if they are not already included in your rent) include a bed (with mattress, duvet, pillow and covers), a table (with chairs) for you to eat on, a desk (and chair) with a desk light, fridge/freezer, kitchen utensils and cleaning equipment.

All of these things are basic furnishing everyone needs, and hopefully your new accommodation will already have some of them.

However if they don’t, you will need to purchase them for yourself and do so within your available budget.

If you have a lot of money to spend, then you can easily pick up these things new from any store. However more likely than not your budget will be limited, so you will have to try and get them as cheaply as possible.

So let’s now have a look at some ways you can buy cheap furniture for your new home.

Buy Furniture At Car Boot Sales

One of the best ways to get home furnishings cheaply is to go to a local car boot sale. If you are unsure of whether such a sale exists in your area, try asking a local as they will probably know.

Car boot sales are an excellent way to pick up quality furniture cheaply, so they are definitely worth going to for the first time renter.

The good thing about car boot sales is that you can find a whole host of things from smaller items such as chairs and lights, to large items such as tables, desks and even beds.

Charity Shops

Another option is to go to a local charity shop, as they will also have quality furniture at a reasonable price. They may not have the most modern furniture available, but for a temporary solution they may fit the bill.

One thing to bear in mind however with charity shops, is that they will usually have a limited number of items to offer and you can’t really predict what they will have and when.

Most of the time you will find items such as chairs, desks and tables.

Buy Furniture On eBay

eBay is another good place to look. Not only can you find things very cheaply on eBay, but there is also a massive selection to choose from and it will be delivered to you.

If you can find items that are listed as pick up only and are local within your area, you will be able to get stuff cheaper as a lot less (if any) people will bid on them.

Get It Free

Here’s a great secret you might not know about. In some countries people actually advertise on the Internet things they no longer want, and are willing to give them away for free.

Here in England a popular site is called “FreeCycle“, and you can get many decent items completely free as long as you respond to the ads quickly enough.

You will find a large assortment of items that people are looking to get rid of such as sofas, desks, beds, cabinets, chairs and tables. It is quite surprising what people actually give away, so this is something definitely worth looking out for!

Family & Friends

Sometimes if your friends or family know that you are looking for furniture, they will give it to you or sell it to you at a very low price.

A Temporary Solution

Overall getting quality second hand furnishing for your home isn’t that difficult if you look around, and its one of the best ways of reducing your initial start up costs.

Sure you might prefer to get new and expensive furnishings, but if doing so is going to break your budget then this is something you definitely want to avoid.

Later on when you have settled in and have a bit more money, you can always sell your furniture and get something better. So furnish your place slowly and don’t go overboard.
