Choosing Travel Compression Socks
Choosing The Right Travel Compression Socks
One of the most important factors in purchasing travel compression socks, is to ensure that you get the right size.
If the compression socks are the wrong size they will not only be uncomfortable to wear, but may also prevent blood circulating back down to your legs. This may actually increase the risk of deep vein thrombosis.
Types Of Travel Compression Socks
Generally there are two types of compression socks. The first are knee length, and the second are above knee length.
For most people, knee length compression socks are more comfortable than thigh length. But ultimately what you choose comes down to personal preference.

It should be noted however that both styles are equally as effective at reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis, so it is best to get what you are most comfortable with.
Thickness Of Travel Compression Socks
Another factor to take into consideration is that compression socks generally tend to be thicker than regular types of socks.
This means that shoes may feel tighter whilst wearing compression socks, which could negatively impact blood circulation.
For this reason it is generally advised to wear your compression socks for several days before travel. This will allow them to stretch out slightly, whilst also giving you time to experiment with different shoes.
Pressure Rating Of Compression Socks
When purchasing travel compression socks, always ensure that the pressure they exert is rated at above 14 mm Hg. Compression socks are only effective at reducing the risk of deep vein thrombosis above this level of ankle pressure.
The study which examined the effect of travel compression socks on long haul airline passengers described here, used socks that were rated at 20 mm Hg.
Although compression socks can be rated at over 50 mm Hg, for anything above 20 mm Hg, it is best to speak to your doctor first before using them.
