The Importance Of A Personal Goal

  • All successful people have goals and objectives.
  • Personal goals give your life direction and purpose.
  • Goal setting is the starting point of all success.

What’s the point of learning how to be successful, if you are not going to actively use that information? You can spend your whole life reading about success, but in the end what really matters are your actions.

So, are you going to be an armchair General? Or get your hands dirty and fight on the front line? This article is all about the importance of goal setting. So sit up straight and pay attention!

Without Personal Goals You Will Drift Aimlessly In Life

Since you are reading about success, it’s a good bet that you would like to become successful. But do you know specifically what you want to be successful at? What are your plans for this month? How about this year? Or 5 years from now?

personal goal plan

Most people do not have a clue what they will be doing tomorrow, let alone 5 years from now. They may have a few vague ideas, but nothing they have really thought about for any meaningful period of time.

Goal Setting Makes You Think About Your Life

So why is taking the time to decide what you want in life important? Well, let me give you an example.

Imagine you are sitting in a small boat, by yourself, in the middle of the sea. You look around and all you see is open water.

What do you do? Where do you go?

But now suppose you have just found a compass and map, it has been under your seat all this time! Looking at the map, you decide where you want to go and use your compass to take you in the right direction.

Life is a lot like sailing, if you don’t know where you’re going, you won’t go anywhere.

Personal Goals Help You Decide What You Want In Life

All successful people have clearly defined specific goals. They have taken the time to think about what they really want in life, and then created specific plans of action to accomplish those goals.

Goal setting is therefore simply the process of moving from where you are, to where you want to be. Goal setting is your map and compass that will give your life meaning, direction and a sense of purpose.

Once you know what you want to do in life, goal setting will help you to avoid wasting your time on tasks that add no real value to your life.

As a result, you will find that once you start setting goals your time management skills and productivity will automatically improve.

Personal Goals Focus The Mind

Once you begin the process of goal setting, your mind becomes focused just like a camera lens. It will then begin to attract the people, circumstances and opportunities into your life that are needed to accomplish your goals.

Goal setting will also help to build up your confidence levels, because when you begin setting goals you will start to feel as though you are in control of your life. Without goal setting you will always be drifting aimlessly through life, without any real direction or purpose.

This is why goal setting is so important, and why it is a skill you should take the time to master if you wish to be successful in life.

Hi, I think that many people have such a fear of failure that they are afraid of what could happen if they take action. Successful people find the courage to take action and have a plan in place to help them stay focused and achieve their goals. You have to change the way you think to awaken to your life’s purpose.

  7. Martin Says:

Hi Kyle, yes you are completely correct. Some people do have a fear of failure, and fear the change that may occur when they take a new course of action. Sometimes it’s just more comfortable staying in the familiar known.

I couldn’t agree more with you, in order to awaken your life’s purpose you need to change the way you think. That’s the main purpose of this site, to reprogram how people percieve themselves and the world so that they can effect a meaningful change in their life.

In terms of fear of failure and fear of success, I have addressed these specifically in the articles on fear which you can find on the homepage under “courage/fear”

I have always been getting excited on reading these kind of articles, like the ones in Steve Pavlina. But never change a bit. I am afraid of many things, it seems that I have been living in fear all my life. As for goal setting, I got none. As Akshay states, people are trying hard to get more money, and forgot the real joy of life. I always get confused by these kind of statements. Yes, it is kind of contraditory: if you want enjoy life, you got to have a lot of money , but if you dont work hard, you get no money.

What I mean is that I have always failed to set goals, so I never reaches any meaningful goals. Hopefully this serial of goal setting article can help me out. Thanks. Martin. Great post.

    Hi Davex,

I don’t believe people can change just by reading an article. However i do believe that a well written article can spark an idea or emotion, that will eventually lead to someone changing their life for the better.

The reason for this is because most of what drives our behaviour is hidden away in the subconscious, in the form of beliefs that influence how we see ourselves and the world around us. Changing these subconscious beliefs, is in my opinion, how you can make a lasting change in your life. However this takes time, and you need to experience things which will confirm to you the new beliefs you want to incorporate into your life.

For example, if i were to tell you that my cat could morph itself into a dog, you would not believe me and probably think i was crazy. However if i were to show you that happening in real life, so you can personally see and experience it, then you would form a new belief in your mind that some cats can morph into dogs. Thereby overwriting your previous belief that cats cannot morph into dogs.

And this is how i believe people can change their lives. By examining their current beliefs system, questioning whether they are true and what evidence is there to support them, and then forming new beliefs and reinforcing them through real world experience until they become the dominant belief.

I wrote about beliefs in this article series

Fear affects us all, and i don’t believe you can completely overcome fear, as some fears occur unconsciously without us even being aware of it happening. However for known fears i do believe they can be overcome, or managed to a level where they do not negatively affect your life.

I wrote more about fears in this article series

    http://www.eruptingmind.com/what-causes-fear-types-of-fear/

If you want to start setting goals, start by making small goals for yourself. List the things you need to do on paper for the day, and cross them off when you complete them. This is a great way to get yourself thinking about the things you want to acheive in your life.

Whilst money is important, money itself does not make you happy. Look at all the celebrities who turn to drugs or suicide. Money did not make them happy. Sure it was fun to begin with, but people become bored of things after awhile. True happiness, true self esteem, can only come from within you.

If you are constantly looking at the things around you, and thinking they will make your life better and happier when you get them, they won’t. Only you can do that. So do the best you can to make money, but don’t see it as your only source of happiness.
