Are You Aware How Important Career Planning Is?

The Importance Of Career Planning

One of the most challenging aspects of career planning is defining exactly what you want to achieve.

But even if you do know what you want, you may then start to have doubts as to whether or not you have chosen the right career path.

Being clear on these issues is one of the most important things you can do when it comes to career planning and setting career goals, because if you are unclear and make the wrong choice, you could end up in a job you hate.

Unfortunately this scenario is much more common than you would imagine, as studies show that the large majority of people are unhappy with the direction of their chosen career path.

As a result they spend most of the working day trying to distract themselves from their job, or wishing they were somewhere else.

The only way to avoid ending up in a job you hate is by knowing exactly what sort of job you would like to have. In order to do this however, you need to do some career planning.

In this and the next article on planning your career, we will look at the process of career planning and how to set career goals.

But to start with, let’s quickly define what we mean by a “job” a “career” and “career planning”. Then later we will look at whether or not you have chosen the right career path.

What Is A Job?

A job is defined as a paid occupation. A job is therefore something you do regularly for pay.

e.g. working at McDonalds

What Is A Career?

A career is a long-term or lifetime job. It is a profession you choose to spend the rest, or most, of your life in.

e.g. being a teacher or a nurse

What Is Career Planning?

Career planning means to plan what job you would like to do for most, or the rest, of your life.

The main difference between a job and a career is that with a job you can normally leave it and find another quickly and easily.

With a career it becomes more difficult to do this, because careers usually require some form of specialist training, skills or knowledge.

A career also tends to be focused on one particular area, whereas a job can be in many different things.

Note: This article will largely focus on career planning, although the information given would be equally applicable to a job.

Do You Hate Your Chosen Career?

Even the most successful people have times in their life when they become unsure of their chosen career path.

These thoughts usually come as a result of some difficulty or challenge they face, which then makes them question whether or not they made the right choice.

If you have had such feelings about your job, you can quickly find out if you are in the right career by asking yourself the following question:

“Do my doubts fade away after challenges or obstacles are overcome?”

If the answer is yes, then you are probably in the right career and should stay there. This is because regardless of the job you are in, there will always be times when you question whether you are doing the right thing or not.

That’s just a natural part of any career, and is more of a test of your perseverance than anything else.

When those difficulties pass, you then become motivated to keep going by remembering why you initially chose your career and what you enjoy about it.

When You Should Look Into Career Planning

If you answered no to the previous question, then you may need to seriously consider the possibility that you are in the wrong job and so would benefit from taking the time to do some career planning.

If your doubts don’t fade after overcoming obstacles or challenges, then it is most likely because you chose your job for the wrong reasons.

For example, perhaps you chose a certain career path because it would make your parents happy, or because it paid well?

But now after being in the same job for some time, you find that you don’t enjoy it anymore and don’t get any satisfaction from it.

As a result these doubts will continue to linger in your mind throughout the rest of your life, unless you do something about it.

The effects of this doubt are probably already very evident to you, as people who think they are in the wrong job often feel as though their life is boring and that it lacks any real meaning or purpose.

Instead of enjoying what they do, they just go through the motions doing only what is required, constantly looking at the clock to see when their day ends and at the calendar to see how close they are to the weekend or a holiday.

It is times like this when you need to carefully look at your job and do some career planning to determine your overall goals and objectives. This is what we shall look at in the next article.
