The Video Recorder Inside Your Head

Power Of The Subconscious Mind

  • Your subconscious mind is like a video recorder that records everything.
  • Early years of life have a big influence on the subconscious mind.
  • Whatever the subconscious records, it will play back to you as a program.

In the last few articles I talked about the subconscious mind, but I did not provide an explanation of what the subconscious is.

In this series of articles I will ask what is the subconscious mind? Explain why it is important, and discuss how you can influence it.

What Is The Subconscious Mind?

If you are unfamiliar with the subconscious mind, think of it as a video recorder that has recorded everything you have ever done or experienced.

Your subconscious mind then plays back programs to you (in the form of beliefs and behaviors) from information that has been frequently entered into it (especially during your first 6 years of life).

Early Years Of Life Greatly Influence The Subconscious Mind

Your first 6 years of life are extremely important in shaping your subconscious mind, because as children we are genetically programmed to model (copy) those around us and therefore we rapidly acquire/absorb new information.

This information first comes from our parent’s and from them we learn what we can or can’t do and what is good or bad.

Because we have no frame of reference to compare this information against, our subconscious mind automatically accepts it as true.

Your Mind Is Not Yours

This is an extremely important concept to grasp, because what it means is that when you are born your mind is not your own.

Rather it is a hybrid copy of your parent’s minds, comprised of their beliefs and perceptions of the world. These beliefs and perceptions will then be used by the subconscious, to compare against all future information.

How Beliefs Begin In The Subconscious Mind

Let’s have a look at an example to demonstrate this.

Jimmy was always told as a child ‘you can’t do that, stop it!’, whilst his brother Bobby was told ‘common Bobby, you can do it!’.

beliefs in subconscious

Later in life, Jimmy never believed very strongly in himself and always doubted his ability to accomplish a task.

Bobby on the other hand was extremely confident and always believed he could achieve anything he wanted.

This is a very simplistic example with only 1 external influence, but it does demonstrate how beliefs can be passed from parent to child and therefore why we share similar beliefs and characteristics.

Coming Up In Part 2…Influencing The Subconscious Mind

In the next part of this article I will continue to explore the subconscious mind, and further discuss how external influences modify our subconscious. I will also explain that whilst we are similar to our parents, why we are also very different.

    Hi Curtis,

If you want to get in direct contact with your subconscious there are a variety of techniques you can use. However you should remember that any subconscious techniques you use will take time for them to become effective.

You may find some of these articles useful:

These articles focus on factors that are important in shaping the subconscious, and dicusss limiting beliefs and self sabotage which come from a subconscious feeling of unworthiness:

(this article is about parental effects on the childhood mind. If you want to fully understand your subconscious mind then you need to carefully examine your childhood and how your parents treated you as a child. Your mind today is a direct result of the programming your parents passed onto you, in addition to other life experiences you have had.)

The following articles discuss how you can get in direct contact with your subconscious and influence it.

This particular article on self talk will help to reveal what sort of programming your mind is currently running. By knowing the programs your mind is running, you then know what you have to work with.

The type of technique you use really depends on why you are trying to influence your subconscious / what you are trying to change.

To answer the second part of your question, what you are really talking about is meditation. This is something that again takes time and practice to master, however you may find some of the mind meditation systems on the free stuff page will help to speed things up for you:

Meditation is another way to reprogram the mind, as it allows you to have a greater influence on reshaping your subconscious. This is best done when you are deeply relaxed.

  5. Jack Says:

I have a question for you.. if the subconscious never sleeps and never stops learning does that mean even if you listened to hypnosis or subliminal messages whilst drunk they would work just the same?

  6. Martin Says:

    Hi Jack,

Yes thats right, the subconscious is always absorbing information from the world around you, no matter what you are doing. It is all recorded, stored and ultimately becomes the sum total of who you are as a person.

In terms of listening to hypnosis tapes or subliminal messages whilst drunk, they will still work the same and they may even have a greater effect on you.

This is because some substances such as alcohol or drugs may provide easier access to the subconscious, and therefore can be used as an aid to speed up any mind programing/re-programing you are doing.

For example, some people use cannabis when mediatating as this allows them to reach very deep and relaxed states without having years of practice in meditation. This states provides a window in which they are able to influence their subconscious mind, through their conscious thoughts.

If you are able to get into a deeply relaxed meditative state whilst drunk, then you may be able to enchance any mind programing you are doing.

However i would not advise someone to do this on a regular basis, as you also have to take into account any negative effects of things such as drugs or alcohol. Which may cause longer term problems if used on a daily basis for example. Although in general, getting mildly drunk once or twice a week purely for relaxation should be ok.
