Cosmetic Surgery: Breast Reduction Surgery

Types Of Breast Reduction Surgery
When it comes to cosmetic surgery, most people tend to think that women only want to do one thing with their breasts, to make them bigger.
However, a growing number of women are now turning to cosmetic surgery in order to make their breasts smaller not larger. Such breast reduction procedures can help to end years of pain and discomfort caused by overly large breasts, and help to give a woman a new lease on life.
The good news is that no matter what size or shape your breasts are, there is a procedure that will help you to change your breasts to how you would like them to be if you currently find your breasts to be too big.
Breast reduction surgery can be done at any age, so providing you are in good health and can afford the surgery, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be able to change the shape and size of your breasts.
Below you will find some of the different types of breast reduction procedures that can be used to alter a woman’s breasts. What procedure a cosmetic surgeon chooses to use on you will largely depend on the size of your breasts and the extent of your breast reduction.
Standard Reduction Breast Plastic Surgery
A standard breast reduction is the most common type of breast reduction surgery performed by cosmetic surgeons.
To carry out the procedure, the surgeon will first make an incision around the edge of your areola and then extend that incision vertically down the middle of the breast in line with the nipple to the crease below the breast. At this point, another incision will be made horizontally along the breast crease.
These incisions allow the surgeon to remove excess skin and breast tissue whilst also elevating the height of the nipple on the breast. If done correctly, the result is smaller and firmer looking breasts that sit higher up on the chest.
During the healing process there will be visible scarring around the edge of the areola, although in most cases these scars tend to be concealed by the areolar margin and so tend not to be very noticeable.
The most noticeable scarring will be down the middle of the breast right underneath and in line with the nipple.
Vertical Scar Breast Reduction
The vertical scar breast reduction is very similar to a standard reduction except that it does not involve making a horizontal incision in the crease underneath the breast.
This means that excess breast tissue and skin can only be removed from the vertical incision. As a result, most surgeons tend to use this procedure on minor breast reduction patients.
With larger breast reduction patients, the standard breast procedure tends to be preferred as it allows the surgeon more freedom to operate on the breast.
However, it is important to note that in America the standard reduction procedure tends to be preferred, whereas in Europe most surgeons tend to use vertical scar breast reduction.
Breast Reduction & Nipple Transfer
A nipple transfer involves cutting out the nipple areolar complex and repositioning it on the breast. This procedure tends to be done on women who have very large breasts and want significantly smaller breasts than what they currently have.
Although this tends to be quite a rare procedure, it is necessary in some cases to achieve the results that are being sought after.
One danger to carrying out this type of breast surgery is that the nipple areolar complex may become distorted, abnormally scarred and the nipple area may no longer become sensitive to touch.
Cosmetic Breast Surgery With Liposuction
Liposuction can be a very effective method for breast reduction as most of the breast is fat. This means the size of the breast can be reduced using an inexpensive and far less invasive form of surgery than standard breast reduction surgery.
However, liposuction breast reduction cannot be used on everyone. This procedure tends to be most suitable for women who have smaller large breasts, minimal or no sagging and have normal nipple height and nipple location.
If you think you meet these requirements, you will be able to have reduction surgery with minimal scarring and minimal downtime.
Male Breast Reduction
In the past, most male breast reduction procedures were carried out using surgery to remove excess breast tissue. Today however, the trend has changed to using liposuction. Only in men with very large breasts is surgery now used.
Liposuction is a quick and cost effective way to treat enlarged male breasts and has the added advantage of leaving minimal scarring.
