What Is A Goal?

A goal can easily be defined as any desired outcome, which is required in the context of your circumstances or your needs or your desires.

For example, you may have a goal to be popular in your college or a goal to earn a certain amount of income on monthly basis to meet your expenses.

Therefore, goal setting can include virtually anything for which you have a desire or need.

Types Of Goal Setting

Goals setting can be differentiated into three basic types, which are as follows:

A. Personal Goal Setting

These are the goals which are intended for some kind of personal development.

For example, to lose weight fast, to gain weight fast, to be confident and disciplined, to be courageous, to be popular or to be intelligent and genius.

Whatever you desire for your own physical or psychological development, it is counted as personal goal setting.

However, a personal goal is not limited to you. It may also be intended for the development of some other person who you care about.

Such as, desiring that your sister should loose some weight and motivating and guiding her in this regard.

Assisting your friend in getting a good job or helping your dad in maintaining his business are also kinds of personal goal setting.

B. Professional Goal Setting

Professional goals are those which are set by a person in order to attain a certain professional outcome, along with income.

Profession here means any business or trade activity by which one can, not only earn an income but also is able to have a growth in their career life.

For example, you may decide to an become expert accountant and for this purpose, you pursue an accounts degree and a job in the same field.

You may also set a goal to have a job in which you should get a certain amount on per month basis.

Professional goal setting also includes your professional and career development. Like, progressing refresh courses, getting hands on experience in a certain skill, enhancing technical knowledge and expertise or becoming better at managing people and business.

These all are the types of professional goal setting.

C. Unexpected Goal Setting

In this category of goal setting, we actually do not intend for a certain goal but all of sudden we get it on an emergency basis.

This compels us to set aside our scheduled goals for a time being, and first achieve the unexpected goal.

For example, you may be working hard to learn a new language but all of sudden your family matters require your immediate attention to solve a certain problem.

In doing so, you do not get any time left to achieve your personal goal; therefore, you need to postpone it until you solve your family matter first.

It is important to note that ideally, we should not be getting more than one or two unexpected goals. Such goals help us to learn decision-making and allow us to experience the diversity of life.

If we take them as a challenge, they make us stronger and more confident in the long run.

On the negative side, getting too many unexpected goals can considerably affect your personal and professional goal setting, which will definitely not improve your life in some ways.

Therefore, we should learn how can we minimize the chances of unexpected goals, but in any situation it is implausible to try to not getting any unexpected goals.

Short & Long Term Goal Setting

Goals, be they of any category, are mostly divided into two major kinds, long-term and short-term goals.

Long Term Goal Setting

In these goals, we mostly plan for a period, which exceeds one or two years.

Mostly, professional goals, career goals, and the aim of life are long-term goal setting. Typically, any long-term goal setting should not go beyond 10 years period.

Short Term Goal Setting

In these goals, we need to plan on a short-term basis and the period ranges between days and months.

Typically, such goals do not exceed one year and most of the personal and unexpected goals are of short-term basis.
