What Is Self Confidence?

Self confidence is a word many people use, although it’s usually because they feel they lack it and so are looking for ways to improve their self confidence.

But before we start talking about improving self confidence, let’s quickly define what self confidence is.

What Is Self Confidence?

A person with self confidence believes that they have the ability to overcome any challenge they face, no matter how difficult it may be. They believe they can do something, and believe that they can do it well.

However this doesn’t mean that a self confident person will never feel afraid or nervous, because these are emotions we all experience.

Rather it means that they persist despite these emotions, because they believe that they can do something and so they will.

Benefits Of Improving Self Confidence

One of the main benefits of improving self confidence is the belief you will develop in your ability to achieve something. Once you believe you can achieve something, you are much more likely to see through what you started to the end.

People who lack self confidence however, tend to get put off when they see obstacles in front of them. They will either give up immediately, or give up half way through because things look to be impossible.

Improving Self Confidence & Leadership Skills

Another major advantage improving self confidence is that you are likely to remain calm when under pressure, because you know that you can achieve whatever it is you set out to do.

This not only allows you to think better, but will also inspire confidence in other people who will look to you as a natural leader.

People who lack self confidence in their abilities tend to break down quickly under pressure. They start to panic and fear the worst, because in their mind they feel they are going to fail and can constantly see that image in their mind.

Obviously this type of person will not be seen as a leader by others, and overall will tend to zap the confidence of those around them.

What Does Self Confidence Feel Like?

As was briefly mentioned earlier, improving self confidence doesn’t necessarily mean you will never feel afraid or nervous. These are emotions we all experience, and there is actually very little you can do to stop yourself feeling them.

What you can do however, is to control those emotions, so that you retain your compose and your ability to think, rather than letting your emotions control you.

This is something which will come with practice, and will increase as your confidence grows.

Signs Your Self Confidence Is Improving

Here are some of the things to look out for which signal that your self confidence is improving:

• You can remain calm in situations which would normally cause you to panic.

• You can breathe easily and naturally.

• You can work towards your goals with an expectation of success rather than failure.

• You feel that you can deal with the challenges that lie ahead of you, rather than fearing them and turning away.

• You can laugh at yourself and accept constructive criticism from others, instead of being so defensive all the time.

• Overall you feel more positive about yourself and your life, instead of feeling so negative all the time.

• You start to feel that in the end things will be ok no matter what happens.

Just Be Yourself!

As you can see from these descriptions, being self confident is actually just being your true self and acting out who you really are.

Far too often people repress their true self because they have been taught to do so throughout their life. This then causes them to feel depressed most of the time, and like they have no purpose in life.

Being self confident will help you to regain the true self you have lost, so that you can finally be yourself again and achieve your maximum potential in life.

Summary

Improving self confidence comes from a belief in your ability to accomplish whatever you set out to do, regardless of what stands in your way.

This does not mean you have to become superman and feel invincible, but rather to keep your cool and take things one step at a time because you know things will work out ok in the end.
