Useful Success Tips

Success Tip 1 - Read 1 Hour Each Day

The average person reads less than 1 book per year, and 80% of all books sold are bought by 20% of the population.

This means that only a small percentage of people read books, and those who do read, make up the highly educated and successful top 20%.

reading benefits

If you are able to spend 1 hour reading each day, that will translate to 1 book per week, 4 books per month or 52 books per year.

In a society where the average person reads less than 1 book per year, what sort of an advantage do you think that will give you?

Benefits - Improved concentration and focus. Wide range of knowledge. Become expert in a subject relatively quickly.

Success Tip 2 - Cut Out The Crap

If you want to be successful, you must discipline yourself to focus on doing things that add value to your life. Many people spend hours each day watching TV, listening to music, playing video games or reading magazines.

lack discipline

Whilst these may be enjoyable things to do, they will not make you successful or an expert in your field.

Benefits- More time to spend on valuable activities that enhance your life and career.

Success Tip 3 - Listen To Audio Cassettes

The average car owner drives 10-20 thousand miles per year. This can be as many as 500-1000 hours per year in the car, which translates to 10-20 40 hour weeks!

Most people spend this time listening to the radio, what a waste! Imagine how much extra information you could learn by listening to educational audio cassettes instead!

learn from audio

Any form of transportation that is used daily such as a bike, bus, train, walking or car is an ideal time for learning, so use it wisely!

Benefits- Become an expert in your field. Increase your knowledge on a wide range of subjects while other people hum along to their favorite tunes. Improve brain function and listening skills.

Success Tip 4 - Get Up Early

The optimum sleeping time is 6-8 hours, and there have been studies showing that if you sleep less or more than this you may shorten your lifespan.

So get up early and instead of watching TV or reading newspapers, spend the first 30-60 minutes of your day reading something educational and related to your field of interest.

wake up early

Afterwards spend a few minutes rewriting your goals for the day, so you can give yourself a sense of purpose and focus for the hours ahead.

Remember, you have the most influence on your subconscious mind in the morning or at night, so make sure you feed your mind with beneficial and positive information during this period.

Benefits- Starts the day in a positive way. Unlikely to be disturbed or distracted in morning.

Success Tip 5 - Invest In Yourself

If you own a business you know that it’s always a good idea to invest a portion of your profits back into your business, as this helps it grow and get stronger. People are no different.

invest in success

Since your biggest asset is your mind, spend money on educating yourself by buying books, audio cassettes or attending lectures given by experts. The more you spend on improving yourself, the bigger your rewards will be.

Benefits - Expand your knowledge and skills, thereby increasing your personal value and worth.

Success Tip 6 - Become A Learning Machine

Make it your goal to learn as much as you can about your field of interest, and never assume you know everything.

Have an open mind and study people who have already achieved success at the thing you are trying to do.

learning machine

Never be afraid to ask people for help, you will find that successful people more often than not will be more than willing to help or give you advice.

Benefits - A desire to learn will motivate you and make you grow as a person. New information strengthens the brain and keeps it healthy.

Hmmm…does reading blogs count? I probably read about 30 minutes a day, it’s my unwinding time at the end of the day, but outside the books I’ll bet I read over 4 hours a day of various blogs, news sites and whatever. Does that count?

  2. Martin Says:

Yes! Absolutely! Reading is still reading, no matter what form it is. As long as you are gaining some benefit from it, then you should continue.

I am happy to know these tips. I enjoy music and spend most of my time listening while doing other things like reading and the rest. Do you think am on the right track?

  5. Martin Says:

If you are able to concentrate on reading whilst listening to music thats ok, but i would imagine it would depend on what you are reading and the type of music you listen to.

Magazines, comics, browsing the internet would all be fine to do while you are listening to music. But if you are studying, then it’s probably not a good idea.

This is because the more tasks you do at the same time, the more your brain power will be spread out between those tasks. So by concentrating on one thing at a time, you can give all your attention and brain power to it.

  12. suria Says:

i tried spending time reading but i am always busy with college, assignments and all . I just can’t find anytime to read. Do u think i shud leave my assignments aside and give first priority to reading?

  13. Martin Says:

    Hi Suria,

I can’t tell you how to prioritize your workload, only you can do that.

However what I can say is that reading daily is one of the most beneficial things you could do to help you learn and master a new subject. So it is something you should definitely try to do.

If you find that you don’t have the time to read, look at what you do throughout the day that you can replace, or partially replace, with reading. Even if it is for only 30 minutes.

Some suggestions could include, cutting down on the hours you watch TV, or getting up earlier. The key is to replace non essential activities, with activities that will provide you with the greatest value in the long term.

  14. Tawanda Says:

    Suria,

I work in a college setting and used to have that excuse on reading. When you are under pressure I have to admit it feels very real. I read a great book called Getting Things Done by David Allen. I found it helpful. Also, when I started taking stock of things I actually did during the day, I found amazing ways of recovering precious time.
And Martin, I just discovered your site today. I will bury myself in your wealth of helpful tips.

Thanx, Martin, for cool tips and this informative site in general. One more thing is worth mentioning: stop you people chatting online, entering meaningless discussions on forums etc. I was amazed by how much useful work I was able to do after having quit all that. (Well, this very moment I am still writing a comment ;p, but I have a reason for this: if I get something good, I tend to give at least smth. in return or contribue somehow, whereas aforementioned dull, empty arguing leads to nothing. The same holds true for reality as well: don’t ever care for other people’s opinion, mind your own bussiness (as Martin has already said elsewhere: those, criticizing or preaching at you, most probably are jealous. So, don’t let them steal your precious time, nor bring you down and thus make you fail)). Good luck.
